Strengthening Relations Between India and the Maldives: Key Agreements like Rupay Card in Maldives

The President of the Maldives visited India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his gratitude and desire to strengthen relations with India.

He has recognized that falling into China’s debt trap could lead to long-term captivity and ruin for his country, as seen in other nations. The President wants to ensure that the Maldives maintains a balanced relationship with China and India but is keen on deepening ties with India to strengthen relations between India and the Maldives: key agreements like the Rupay Card in the Maldives.

Key Agreements and Initiatives Launched

During the Maldives President’s visit to India, several key agreements were signed, and initiatives were launched. The launch of the Rupay card in the Maldives, the inauguration of a new runway at Hani Madhav International Airport, and the handover of 700 social housing units are some effective achievements.

Additionally, various Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, including a currency swap agreement, an MoU between Rashtriya Raksha University India and the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement of the Republic of Maldives, an agreement between India’s CBI and the Maldives’ Anti-Corruption Commission, and another MoU between India’s National Judicial Academy and the Maldives’ Judicial Service Commission for training and capacity building to strengthen the Maldives’ judicial process.

Cooperation in Sports and Defense

An MoU was also signed between India and the Maldives in the FS. Both countries have agreed on military cooperation, and talks for a free trade agreement have begun. With the introduction of the Rupay card in Maldives, there is speculation that UPI integration will follow soon.\

Future Prospects for India-Maldives Partnership

India has continuously supported the Maldives in capacity building and infrastructure development. As both nations work towards strengthening their friendship, the India-Maldives relationship will grow even stronger in the coming days.
