Israeli Airstrikes Mark Gaza Shelters and Yemen, Causing Substantial Casualties: Several days of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and Yemen have raised tensions in the region and claimed many lives.

Lately, in Gaza, high-profile structures that Israel said housed Hamas were attacked, but nurtured information from human rights organizations shows that schools, hospitals, and civilian shelters have been hit. The UN has protested a high civilian death rate, and already more than 1,500 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the operation.

Tens of thousands of families have been made homeless as the besieged populations of entire cities are packed into substandard shelters without adequate access to food, water, or medical care. At the same time, in Yemen, strikes said to be aimed at hitting suspected militant camps in the north have been expensive in terms of civilian lives.

Eyewitnesses say that several residential districts were targeted, more than 300 people were killed, and several hundred were wounded. Yemen, which has been struggling with a long-standing humanitarian crisis and severe famine, continues to feel the pressure as its health structures fail to manage the growing number of victims.

International NGOs such as the Red Cross have urged the international community to act now with vigor to shield civilians and deliver vital humanitarian necessities. In a global context, there has been a divided or biphasic response. While some countries have come out to support the attacks on Gaza as an act of defense, some of the cultures, mainly Arab and European cultures, have registered their displeasure in the attacks, calling for restraint and respect for international laws.

There are demonstrations against airstrikes in capitals for a cease-fire and for the protection of innocent lives lost. As things get worse, diplomatic strategies to calm the unrest in both Gaza and Yemen have emerged as crucial. The two main factions are expected to escalate the fighting despite recent minor victories with consequences that may likely result in a broader war that is catastrophic to all warring sides.
