D. Gukesh: The Rising Star of Indian Chess on the Brink of World Glory: Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh is on the brink of writing history at the World Chess Championship in Singapore. Stalemated 6-6 against the Chinese champion Ding Liren for 12 matches, Gukesh demonstrated great skill and tenacity in Game 13 but could not score a win.
Game 14 on Thursday may put Gukesh as India’s second World Chess Champion after Viswanathan Anand. Gukesh was born on 29th May 2006 in Chennai, INDIA; he belongs to a TELUGU-speaking family.

His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is an ENT surgeon, and his mother, Dr. Padma, is a microbiologist. Born in 2003, Gukesh started playing chess when he was just seven and soon rose through the ranks. He was crowned the winner of the Under-9 Asian School Chess Championship of 2015.
He later triumphed in the U-12 World Youth Chess Championship in 2018 and clinched five golds at the Asian Youth Chess Championships of the same year. A separate achievement was his becoming the 3rd youngest ever Grandmaster at 12 years old.
He created headlines in 2023 by becoming the youngest player to achieve a rating of 2750 plus and dethroning Anand as India’s uncrowned king after 37 years of his supremacy. In 2024, Gukesh could win the Candidates tour; however, in 2023, Gukesh achieved the Candidates right by winning the tournament.
He also graced the Indian team that won the country’s first Chess Olympiad gold in September. Winning over Ding in Game 14 will put Gukesh on the list of great chess players and help further escalate India’s legacy in chess.
