Dhanteras: October 29, 2024:

Dhanteras is the beginning of the celebrations day. On this day, people pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari for prosperity and health. Dhanteras is believed to bring good fortune for the coming year. Homes are pure and embellished to greet wealth, and diyas (oil lamps) are lit in the evening to light up the surroundings. Devotees purchase new items, including gold coins and gold jewelry.

Choti Diwali: October 31, 2024: Date and Shubh Muhurat

This day marks Lord Krishna’s triumph over the demon Narakasura. Families celebrate by adorning their houses with lights and diyas and preparing delicious sweets. The aura is filled with joy as people share these goodies with friends and family. Here are the shubh muhurat to keep in mind: 

  • Lakshmi Puja Muhurat – 6:52 pm to 8:41 pm
  • Pradosh Kaal – 6:10 pm to 8:52 pm
  • Vrishabha Kaal – 6:52 pm to 8:41 pm
  • Amavasya Tithi Begins – 6:22 am on October 31
  • Amavasya Tithi Ends – 8:46 am on November 1

When is Diwali 2024?

We will celebrate Diwali 2024, also called Laxmi Puja, on Thursday, November 2, 2024. However, the festival lasts five days, starting on Monday, October 28, and concluding with Bhai Dooj on Friday, November 3.

The 5 Days of Diwali 2024

  1. Dhanteras (Monday, October 28, 2024): Diwali starts with Dhanteras when people purchase new items such as gold, silver, or kitchen utensils to bring good luck and fortune into their homes.
  2. Narak Chaturdashi (Tuesday, October 29, 2024): Also known as Choti Diwali, this day is devoted to releasing negativity and celebrating the victory of Lord Krishna over the monster Narakasura.
  3. Diwali (Thursday, November 2, 2024): This is the main day of the festival, honored with prayers to Goddess Laxmi, the divinity of prosperity and fortune. Houses are lit with diyas, and families for feasts and fireworks.
  4. Govardhan Puja (Friday, November 1, 2024): on this date, people glorify Lord Krishna, who lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect the people from heavy rains. It is also known as Annakut when food is offered to the gods.
  5. Bhai Dooj (Friday, November 3, 2024): The festival finishes with Bhai Dooj, a day that honors the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters implore for their brother’s long life, and brothers give gifts in return.
