CJI Chandrachud Proposes Justice Sanjiv Khanna as His Successor
This request, shared with the Union government, comes as CJI Chandrachud prepares to retire on November 10, 2024. If approved, Justice Khanna will be considered official as the 51st Chief Justice of India and serve for six months, completing on May 13, 2025.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, presently the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, has a preeminent legal career. He started practicing law in 1983 and was an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005.
Promoted to the Supreme Court in January 2019, he made landmark judgments related to electoral bonds and the abrogation of Article 370.
This nomination pursues an appointed convention: the outgoing Chief Justice advises a successor from among the senior justices. The Union government predicted to approve this suggestion shortly, paving the way for Justice Khanna to guide the apex court.
As CJI Chandrachud’s term nears its end, his request marks a pivotal moment in India’s judicial terrain, ensuring continuity and stability.
